Studies show that many people do not end up with their true love. In fact, 52% of women state that their husbands are not their soulmates.

But how do you know someone is your soulmate when you see them? Will just being with your ‘soulmate’ guarantee a relationship that lasts forever?

I’m yet to find convincing answers to these questions, but I found something else that answers a more important question..

“For those of us that are already in relationships, how can we make it last a lifetime?”

Here are some of the psychological facts (which we already know but hardly remember when we need them the most) that can help us build lasting relationships.

1. Your relationship will last longer if you spend more on your partner

A new study published in the Journal of Positive Psychology reveals that spending money on others makes people happier than spending it on themselves.

When someone is smiling because of what you have done for them, you get a feeling of accomplishment. You feel good about yourself, and that’s a perfect description of a pleasurable experience.

Same thing applies to relationships. When your partner is happy for what you have done for them, you get a sense of happiness and fulfillment knowing that your partner is smiling because of you.

It’s a win-win strategy.

So spend and invest in your partner. Put a smile on their face. Buy them gifts. Tell them what you like the most about them. Tell them you appreciate them for everything they do. Acknowledge their efforts and little improvements. Tell them you’re happy they’re in your life.

In the book ‘Solve For Happy’ by happiness expert Mo Gawdat, spending on people is a good type of selfishness because you feel good for making other people feel good.

And guess what? It’s a two-way thing.. There’s a good chance your partner will reciprocate the good vibes too.
